Access Platforms

What Are Access Platforms?

An access platform is a temporary working deck built to give trades a safe, level surface at height. Platforms are boarded out, fitted with guardrails and toeboards, and tied into a supporting structure so operatives can work with both hands free. Configurations range from single lift decks over a shopfront to multi level platforms spanning a full elevation.

Our teams design and build access platforms around the job in hand, whether that is cladding replacement, window installation, brickwork repair, or plant maintenance. Every deck is set out to TG20:24 configurations where applicable, loaded correctly for the duty class required, and handed over with a scaffold tag. Where headroom or ground conditions are tight, we adapt the design rather than compromise the working area.

Why You Need an Access Platform

Working at height from ladders or improvised staging slows trades down and raises risk. A properly built access platform gives a stable deck, safe edge protection, and room to store materials at the workface, which cuts trips up and down and keeps programmes on track. It also satisfies the hierarchy of control set out in the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Under CDM 2015, the principal contractor must show that access arrangements are planned, inspected, and maintained. Our CISRS carded operatives erect each platform to a documented method statement, and every structure is inspected before first use and at seven day intervals thereafter. You receive the paperwork you need for site files and insurer requests.

Access Platform FAQs

A scaffold tower is a freestanding, mobile unit suited to short duration tasks in one position. An access platform is a fixed, boarded deck tied into a building or supporting structure, built to span a wider working area and carry heavier loads for longer periods. Towers work well for a single light task; access platforms are the better choice when several trades need continuous, safe access across a full elevation.

Loading depends on the duty class the platform is designed to. Light duty decks suit inspection and painting, general purpose decks handle most trades and their materials, and heavy duty decks carry masonry and stored materials. We confirm the intended use before design so the correct class is specified, then mark the safe working load on the scaffold tag at handover. A platform should never be loaded beyond its tagged limit.

Yes. Any structure occupying the public highway or footway requires a licence from the local authority, and conditions vary between London boroughs. We handle the application, supply the drawings and insurance details councils ask for, and fit lighting, signage, and pedestrian protection where required. Lead times differ by borough, so tell us your target start date early and we will build the permit process into the programme.

Most domestic access platforms are erected within a single day once the design and any permits are in place. Larger commercial decks spanning multiple elevations typically take two to five days, depending on height, tie availability, and site access. After a short site review we confirm a firm programme and phase the build around your other trades, with out of hours working available where daytime access is restricted.
